Our School

Stearns Junior-Senior High School in Millinocket is located approximately 70 miles north of Bangor, Maine. Our school is adjacent to Millinocket Stream, with Katahdin, Maine’s highest mountain at 5267 feet, as a backdrop. Katahdin is located at the center of Baxter State Park and is the terminus of the Appalachian Trail that winds south 2000+ miles to Georgia.

Our Facilities
Stearns boasts state of the art facilities available to our students and the community. The high school gym seats 1800 people and hosts many athletic contests and gatherings throughout the year. A beautiful 408 seat performing arts auditorium is used for school programs, plays, concerts, dance recitals and a variety of other community events. A large cafeteria is used to serve students breakfast and lunch throughout the academic year. Our athletic fields are located just to the north of the school and are where our football, field hockey, softball, and baseball teams compete.

Academics
Highly qualified teachers instruct students in the core academic offerings of English, Social Studies, Math, Language Arts, and Science. Teachers engage students in the class and advance them towards higher levels of thinking. In all curriculum areas, Stearns high school continues to meet each student’s individual needs to best prepare for an ever-changing world.

We have 17 Advanced Placement (AP) courses available to our students through Virtual High School as well as AP courses offered online through AP4all.org, which is provided free by the Maine Learning and Technology Initiative (MLTI). Additionally, online college courses are offered to 11th and 12th grade through the University of Maine Systems at Fort Kent and Orono. By taking AP college-level courses students are able to earn college credit, standout in the college admissions process, and be challenged by a fast paced advanced curriculum.

Arts
Our visual and performing arts department is one of the best in the state offering band, chorus, music theory, and art classes. There are also a variety of co-curricular activities that are offered such as jazz band, a one act play, a musical, and show choir. Students are given a numerous opportunities to display their talents in the visual and performing arts at Stearns.

Athletics

At Stearns we have fall, winter, and spring sports seasons with a variety of options. We offer football, field hockey, soccer, basketball, baseball, softball, and tennis. We host competitions and tournaments throughout the year and encourage all students to attend to cheer on their classmates!

Maine Seal of Biliteracy

Our school offers the opportunity for students to receive the Maine Seal of Biliteracy. The Seal of Biliteracy is an award that recognizes student achievement in language learning. Students who are proficient in English and an additional language may earn the Seal of Biliteracy by demonstrating their skills on an approved assessment. Highlighting the value of multilingualism, this award becomes part of a student's transcripts and gives students an edge for their post-secondary studies and/or future careers. Our international students are also eligible to receive this award if they fulfill the requirements of the award. Click here for more information on requirements.

Our Community

The town of Millinocket has a rich history and a vibrant community with many offerings. We are a small town with a population of about 4,000 located in a rural setting in the middle of the North Maine Woods. Our location is the perfect starting point for outdoor adventures including hiking, biking, rafting, fishing, star-gazing, swimming, wildlife viewing, climbing, photography - the possibilities are endless! We have a quaint downtown and are unique in that our town has high walkability/bike-friendly with most places within 10-20 minutes apart. Our town is also very safe with extremely low crime rates and a feeling that everyone is looking out for one another. We care about our community here and wish that all of our visitors feel welcome, including our international students!
